Incidents with Chemicals
Accidents happen suddenly and unintentionally. Rapid response is useful in any case. In the event of an accident, please immediately alert the internal emergency number 888 or +41 44 342 11 88 if you are calling from a mobile phone
At ETH Zurich experimental research using a wide variety of chemicals takes place in approximately 2300 laboratories. Despite extensive preventive measures, incidents with chemicals (C-incident) cannot be entirely ruled out.
The CIT comes into action at the Zentrum and H?nggerberg campuses during regular working hours in the following instances:
- Coping with small acute C-incidents which exceed the competence of lab users alone but which are not serious enough to justify calling in the Hazmat Unit of the Fire Brigade, which is subject to cost
- Coping with so-called “non-acute” incidents in which there is no immediate danger ahead but for which action is required
- Planning for and providing support for dealing with non-acute C-incidents (risk analysis and deployment planning); if required in conjunction with external units
- Supporting / interface to the Hazmat Unit of the Fire Brigade in case of large acute incidents
Dr. Ines Raabe heads the CIT. The team consists of voluntary staff who have completed a suitability test and receive regular training in order to handle deployment successfully and safely.

First Aid Material
First aid kits are available, mounted on wall brackets in public areas, so that care can be given for minor injuries. If a kit or material is missing, you will receive a replacement from the responsible Information and Service Centre. All members of the first aid team have a bag with the required material. They deploy directly from their place of work to the patient, carrying this bag.
Defibrillators
30 defibrillators, housed in alarm-secured wall cases, are strategically distributed throughout ETH Zurich. If a case is opened and a defibrillator is taken out, an alarm is triggered for the Emergency Desk and on the pagers of the responsible building area employees (Facility Management Department). The additional alerting of the Emergency Desk, stating the area of deployment, is still necessary as the defibrillators currently cannot be located yet. The defibrillators will, however, be brought to the area of deployment automatically by the Security Service or the first aid team. In addition, all vehicles of the Zurich city police and Zurich emergency services are also equipped with defibrillators. The Emergency Desk can also call these external intervention units if required.
First Aid Rooms
In buildings with a high number of users, a total of 30 first aid rooms are available for in-house treatment of patients. In essence, the first aid team always comes to the location of the incident and decides on whether to call an ambulance or go to a first aid room once they arrive. The rooms are equipped with beds or stretchers and an expanded first-aid kid, which enables a larger number of patients to be treated over a longer period of time. The first aid rooms can also be used as a rest space for those who are ill, pregnant or breastfeeding. Access to the first aid rooms can be applied for by contacting the management of the .

In the event of accidents in laboratories and workshops, SSHE carries out an accident investigation. This investigation is not about looking for culprits. Instead, its aim is to avoid similar events in future and to improve the operational safety system.
